Is crochet making a comeback?
When most people think of crochet, they think of their grandmothers making blankets or hats and scarves. But lately, I think crochet is making a comeback as a fun hobby for younger people to and it’s even making a comeback in fashion. So yes, I think crochet is cool.
I like to use myself as an example. I learned to crochet from my grandmother around the age of ten. By the time I was a teenager, I had abandoned crochet as a hobby in pursuit of something “cooler.” Now, in my mid-twenties, with a job at a programmatic advertising firm, I found myself looking for something fun and relaxing to do after my 9-5. I picked up my crochet hooks and yarn again and I started to create.
More young people are crocheting
Like most trends after 2019, we can probably blame this surge in crochet on the pandemic. A lot of us were stuck inside, isolated for long periods. It makes sense then that we gravitated to creative outlets that brought us peace and comfort. In my opinion, no better hobby combines peace with comfort more than crochet.
I think the most public example of this is Olympic diver, Tom Daley, knitting at the Tokyo Olympics. He called knitting his “superpower” that allowed him to destress in his time away from the diving pool. Tom Daley’s knitting creations went viral and won people’s hearts. If a fit amount athlete can knit, anyone can. We also see crochet products going mainstream with the creation of Woobles. Woobles is a company that sells prepackaged amigurumi crochet kits containing everything you need to get started. By advertising on social media and partnering with big brands like Hello Kitty and Harry Potter, Woobles has made crochet more popular and accessible for beginners..
Crochet is trending in fashion
Have you ever heard of “Craftcore?”
Me either.
But in June 2023, Elle wrote an article highlighting 24 clothing items for the summer. This trend of introducing handmade, crafted elements in clothing and accessories is Craftcore. In 2024, Craftcore is a trend that hasn’t died down. Gen Z is wearing more and more clothing items with crafty textures, like this Abercrombie Crochet-Style Button Up Polo or this Free People Lily Crochet Top. Personally, I love the look and feel of these crochet tops. Crochet is such a unique texture and the crafted look of the stitching gives these shirts an elevated feel.
So what does this mean for people who crochet? Well, it means we can created some of our own clothing pieces and be on trend at the same time! If you’re feeling inspired to hop on the Craftcore trend, you can check out some of my Crochet Clothing Patterns or create something of your own!
